A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
