Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
