Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
